(More customer reviews)Just bought this set and also set 8231 for my kids, almost 6 and 8. We have not had quite the bad experience that the other reviewer had. The sets took between 20-30 minutes to put together with help from an adult.
Yes, when they hit the walls sometimes some parts do fall off.
The pump did work, but it's a little hard for my younger child to work. You have to really press down hard and quickly- my son did not have enough strength in his arms to do this and really make it go far (I could get about 6-8 feet) and he could only got a couple of feet. And if kids try to use their feet as pictured they sometimes hit the car, and then it does break apart. But it works, and i think older kids would be okay and I think my son will get better with practice.
Some issues with the pump....I think if you put the car on too quickly then air gets backed up so that the pump gets stuck, so I always tell my son to go slowly.
We intend to use these sets for a Lego birthday party, so hopefully it will work out!
