(More customer reviews)We love our Kapla blocks, which we received a few years ago and which have entertained my three children and their friends endlessly (ages ranging from 4-12) -- not to mention me! I admit to being wowed by the amazing Kapla/Keva structures in books and on the web, and I enjoy recreating those, but the kids just let their imaginations soar and build wonderful structures on their own.
Anyway, we wanted more Kapla blocks (we had the 200 set), but the prices have gone sky-high, so we purchased these Keva blocks instead, and tossed all 400 into a giant LLBean canvas bag and use the blocks interchangeably. Keva planks seem entirely compatible with Kapla blocks, although they do look different - the Kapla pine blocks have a beautiful grain and a golden color, whereas the Keva maple blocks are grey and not as attractive in my humble opinion. The Keva blocks feel rough to the touch, compared to the Kapla blocks which are smooth. The box came with an insert explaining that the Keva blocks weren't sanded to maintain their precision cut, and I assume that over time as they are handled they will lose the slightly rough feel. It does seem that the Keva planks are ever so slightly heavier, but that hasn't had an impact on my kids ability to build with them. Our Kapla blocks, on the other hand, seem to get a lot of dings in them, but that hasn't affected their structural integrity either.
But honestly, these are nits - the kids haven't noticed the color or the feel of these blocks, they grab from the bag indiscriminantly (unlike, say, their aversion to mega blocks compared to legoes) and are quite pleased with their creations.
So I highly recommend these Keva planks as a substitute or companion for Kapla blocks, as well as on their own merits.
