(More customer reviews)My almost 5 year old son got this as his first Lego set. It's a great start. Lots of bricks of many colors and sizes. It has plenty of pieces for 2-3 kids to play together at the same time. It includes an idea book with some easy to follow pictures, so he was building right away.
I did have to supplement this set, as I watched my kids and noticed what pieces they really needed to play the way they want. This is the "Ultimate House Building Set", but my son really wants to make cars, trains, helicopters, and boats. He also really likes to have "lego guys" to play in his creations. So I added on to this set with:
* Large green baseplate - no baseplate in this set
* More wheels/axels - this set includes 4 wheels, only enough for one vehicle
* Other vehicle parts (windshields, seats, steering wheels, etc)
* Lego people - no people in this set
The baseplates are available at your big toy store. The other misc pieces are readily availble at online auction sites.
This set comes in a nice durable tote box. The box is much bigger than necessary to hold the included pieces. But that's a good thing, because you can easily add whatever other lego's you have and it can store small works-in-progress.
