Kai is the red ninja of fire. If you don't have the LEGO Ninjago Spinjitzu Starter Set 2257, you may want to consider it or the LEGO Ninjago Spinjitzu 3D Battle Arena. The 3D arena is probably better purchased through the Lego store, where I believe the in-store price is $15, though online it is listed at $20. Without one of these, it's hard to keep the tops in a confined area or without falling off a table.
*The Spinner*
The spinner is a custom Lego piece which cannot be disassembled even though it looks like it's two pieces. You cannot make a spinner like this from other Lego parts. It is heavier than standard Lego pieces - I think they added some weights in it to give a longer spin. The ninja's head covering comes off, revealing Kai's battle-scarred face which looks cool to kids. The headcovering also allows you to snap a weapon onto Kai's back, so he can hold all three weapons at once.
One thing I didn't realize about the spinners until we had them is that by rotating the grey piece where Kai's legs go, it raises/lowers him.
*The Cards*
The cards you get in a given package are always the same, so don't worry about buying multiples of the same item just to try and get different cards. You actually get 5 cards (1 Character card & 4 Battle cards):
Card #1: Kai's Character card - this one show's you Kai's powers and abilities
Card #21:Power Up - lets you hold an extra weapon
Card #74:Higher Ground (Gold Card)- lets you build the two 2x1 blocks on the bottom of the spinner to make yours higher. As a "gold" card, you have to be holding a golden weapon to use this card
Card #24:Wall of Fire - You build a stand using the included Lego bricks and place this card in it within the arena. If your opponent knocks it down, they automatically lose.
Card #38:Shaky Bones - Your opponent has to stand his character on only one leg.
Another note about the cards is that in order to use a card, you compare the element power required to use it against the powers listed on your character card. For instance, "Power Up" requires 3 Fire (red) blocks, whereas "Shaky Bones" requires 3 Blue (Lightning) blocks. Therefore, not all players can use all cards, however, Lego has ensured that within a package, your character can use all the cards he comes with. Additionally, each set comes with different cards, so while you won't get duplicates of the same card by buying different sets, the only way to get all the cards is to buy all the characters and the starter set.
*Playability*
The game is perfectly fun without using the cards or playing by the rules, but for kids who want an extra challenge, it's a nice addition. Also note that there's no use for the cards outside of the Spinjitsu game, other than just collecting them for fun. There's currently 40 cards, but they are numbered between 1 and 80. I guess Lego left themselves some room for bringing out more cards.
Overall, a good set, and though a bit pricey, I think the extra is going to the custom spinners created for the game.
*Pairing with other sets & characters*
If you already have the starter set and want characters of different elements, then Kai and Krazi are not the right choice, as they feature the same elements (Fire & Lightning).
The best "Bad Guy" to buy along with Kai is LEGO Ninjago Krazi 2116 because Kai can also use every battle card Krazi comes with. Unfortunately, Krazi cannot use the Higher Ground card that Kai comes with, though that's the only exception. Additionally, if you have the starter set, by purchasing both Kai and Krazi, you'll then have both the Ninjas and Skeletons of Fire & Lightning.
