MONOPOLY Revolution Review

The first thing you will notice when you open this version of Monopoly is that all of the prices have been adjusted to relate to today's prices (or even a little more).
Boardwalk now costs $4 million - and even the lowly Mediterranean Avenue runs $600,000! You have to pay $500,000 just to get out of jail! Fortunately, you start with $15 million, and passing go nets you a hefty $2 million! So what are you going to do with all of that cash? No problem, you now use your bank card to keep all of it under control!
This version of Monopoly plays with the "fast rules" although you could (if you wanted to) use the older rules. In this case, every time you land on a property, if you do not buy it, the bank will put it up for auction. This gets all of the properties out there quickly, and was always an option on the older game.
A couple of new fun things with this version is the options available when landing on "A Zone Space" - formerly called chance. When you land on this location, you can either give all players in any zone on the board a "chance" card, or you can move to the next unowned property and put it up for auction. If all of the properties are owned, you can even "force a deal" where you swap one of your properties with anyone else on the board.
In addition, the game unit (which keeps track of all of the money) will occasionally decide to give the person who just completed a transaction a "chance" card!
There are 4 Utilities now, which can be purchased, making them (like the railroads) a much more dangerous place to land if someone has all four. And, the picture on the Railroads is actually a Bullet Train instead of a steam engine.
For those traditionalists who really WANT to be able to receive cash for landing on Free Parking (WE always did - it saved my bacon in a lot of Monopoly Games) that option is still not part of the rules, but you can still do it. Simply pop your card into the controller and tell it to give you $ from the bank. The same goes for any rules you would like to retain - no one will tell you "NO" you can't do that.
The round board not only gives it a contemporary look, but it gives you more room on the table to keep your properties and your snacks. The music also adds another fun touch, and you have the option of louder and softer - as well as the option of turning it off if you are playing it after the kids go to bed at night.
The game controller takes 3 AAA batteries - so if you are buying it as a gift, you might want to keep this in mind. The only issue I saw was that it limited play to 6 players (the number of cards for the game controller), but I don't remember ever having more than 6 playing.
All in all, this is a fun update on an old game. Kids today will enjoy the new features, and all of us who played the old game (for many hours) will recognize and appreciate seeing all of the familiar names and places.
